Garden History
The Angel Oak Elementary School garden began in March, 2011. This school, principal, and teachers are probably my school garden dream because of their genuine enthusiasm and commitment to this project. We work with the 2nd grade students and teachers each week, along with a multitude of volunteers from the College of Charleston’s Social Entrepreneurship class. One of the 2nd grade teachers, Catheryn Porter, wrote a grant proposal and received $3,000 for a Farm to School grant which will help towards supplies, a tool shed, and possibly a small green house. With the encouragement of the principal, Rodney Moore, this garden will become a school-wide garden sooner than later, with all classes eventually becoming responsible for their own raised bed and garden related theme. Angel Oak is cafeteria composting, and harvesting rainwater. The CACGP will assist Angel Oak with its school garden for three years, at which time, it will fledge into sustainability.
