Garden History

In 2006 we began the children's garden in the Gadsden Green Public Housing Project. It is a joint project with the Charleston Housing Authority and the charter school next to the garden, the Charleston Development Academy. That first small summer garden had grown three times as big by the following year, with bright-colored wooden frames for the flower beds, an entrance arch, concrete blocks rimming the pizza garden, and flowers and vegetables and herbs and strawberries. The garden became a learning setting for the school children and a colorful gathering place for community events. Saturday morning sessions covered everything from building a bird habitat to creating compost to eating sweet corn right off the stalk to taking home bags full of string beans to be cooked! Charleston Development Academy recently (August 2007) celebrated its' five year anniversary and reached its Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) goals through the SC State Department of Education. The Children's Garden Project is proud to be part of their science curriculum.
