Garden History

In the late Spring of 2008, the Charleston Area Children's Garden Project received a call from a very enthusiastic new Executive Director, Greg Liotta, who had viewed our website. He was enamored with the thought that the garden project could be a way to get these young, future moms away from the TV and outside exercising, learning to grow and cook their own food, and taking responsibility for their health. By the beginning of the summer, the girls who resided at the Center were building and painting raised beds, painting terracotta birdbaths, planting herbs and aloe vera to create teas that strengthen their immune system, growing vegetables and planting flowers to enhance the beauty of their courtyard. In this, they were learning respect for the earth as well as respect for each other. The Children's Garden Project began collaborating with Ms. Kaci May, the Charleston County School District home-bound teacher, using the garden as an outdoor classroom for science, health, and environmental studies.
