Garden History
In the Spring of 2008, our Executive Director received a phone call from a Board Member from Jenkins Institute (formerly Jenkins Orphanage). She had viewed our website and invited our director to sit in on a planning session with ReMARK Studio LLC, Landscape ArchItecture, the Jenkins Board Chair Hank Tisdale, and Executive Director Johanna Carrington. By August 2008, the building and painting of the raised beds were begun by the girls living at Jenkins. Since that time, they have planted a Carolina Living Fence along their yard fence, planted 3 banana trees, built a wooden compost bin and several wooden raised beds, as well as a bird house. They have painted and created a bird bath from terra cotta pots, and even begged for (and received) an outside firepit to warm themselves as they tend their garden during the cold Winter months. They have learned to cook pumpkin bread from pumpkins, broccoli dip and pita bread, and sautéed collard greens and tomatoes in garlic and olive oil (most grown from their garden). The plan for the future is to build another edible and sustainable garden across the campus at an additional girl's residence. Ms Carrington sought and earned an Historic certification for the Jenkins Institute site along the Ashley River. She is a feisty woman with feistier plans for the 33 beautiful acres.
