Garden History
The Director of the Charleston convivium of Slow Food USA, Carole Addlestone, connected with the CACGP Director in October of 2008. The desire on the part of Slow Food was to sponsor and become involved with a children's garden. This seemed logical to the Board of Slow Food Charleston because they knew that the best way to implement change in the way people looked at food and health is to begin with the children. Carole had been communicating with Gene Furschcott, the Director of the Yo Art Project, and together created the idea to collaborate with the documentation of “How to Develop a Children's School Garden”. The idea evolved into a garden project implemented at Sanders Clyde Elementary School with the teachers and students of 2nd grade. The garden began on March 3rd 2009 and is fully integrated into the 2nd grade science curriculum. It is performance based using the CCSD Science standards as well as implementing creative writing in Language Arts.
