Watering the garden

Need Help?

Starting a children's garden is exciting for everybody and we are glad to share the slam dunks, the airballs, and the everyday stuff that we've found makes it easier or makes it more difficult. Every new mind that starts to think about children's gardens brings a different slant and new ideas and that helps all of us.

If you think you would like our help in getting a children's garden started in your community, please contact us. We will meet with you and help you to begin the processes needed to achieve your goals. Our focus is shifting to include more training of interested members of a community who are willing to take on the responsibilties of helping the children maintain their gardens. There are many ways we can help. We have many resources that we can offer in the way of tool, materials, instruction and most of all experience.

Ways We Can Help

  • We are affiliated with the Clemson Landscapes for Learning program and gladly come to talk to people interested in children's gardens anywhere along the coast or welcome visitors to exchange ideas in our Charleston gardens.
  • We work with local individuals and groups to size up what would be needed for a successful children's garden at a given location — in terms of organizing, site selection and preparation, garden planning and methods, and teaching plans.
  • We have a tiller and other equipment to help with the start-up work. Whenever we are given extra plants, seed, fertilizer or other garden supplies, we are glad to make sure that they find their way to nearby children's gardens.
  • We have an extensive library of books, maps and other materials on children's gardens and gardening, learning activities and crafts, etc. so people can see what would be useful to them.
  • We have ourselves made up a Children's Garden Handbook, a laminated Veggie Owner's Manual to bring key plant information into the garden, and more.
